Aileen Laverty: Accountancy & Finance
4th year
I spoke with several people who work in the finance sector, and they all highly recommend Heriot-Watt. A senior partner from KPMG with 35 years' experience said Heriot-Watt graduates have a great track record with the firm.
Why I chose this programme
I am studying Accountancy & Finance, which I chose because it provides so many opportunities after graduation. You don’t feel like you are pigeon-holed into just one job. I could work as an Auditor, an Accountant, become a specialist in Taxation, choose a finance role within any organisation or public service, or complete a Masters Degree to become a teacher in various subjects.
The best thing about my programme is that it’s so widely varied, you learn so much that is useful in the real world. It gives you a really full understanding of things that affect you in everyday life, from paying tax on your part-time job to assisting those who plan to set up their own business. You start to see your subjects everywhere you look. It’s also good to realise that not all accountants are little old men with grey suits and no sense of humour!
Why I love the campus
It's like having your own little community when you live on campus. It's a great way to meet new people who are all in the same situation as you
The campus here is beautiful! Bring a frisbee to play with in the spring semester and scarf and gloves to decorate your snowman in the winter. It’s like having your own little community when you live on campus. It’s a great way to meet new people who are all in the same situation as you. Plus you have one of the most beautiful cities in Europe just a short bus ride away!
My career plans
Once I graduate, I plan to get a training post with an accountancy firm and become a Chartered Accountant. I hope to eventually spend time working abroad; accountants are in demand all over the world!
