Recreational Sport Programme
The Recreational Sport Programme (RSP) exists to deliver a wide variety of recreational level competitions to encourage maximum student participation. The programme is led by the Sports Union President. We have four main categories:
- Campus Comps
- Halls Sports
- Participation Programme
- One-Off Events
Campus Comps
Badminton
The badminton leagues are run on a monthly basis by the club with assistance from the SU President. All the leagues are tiered so it is easy to find a level to suit you.
Futsal
Futsal is a 5-a-side football league that runs weekly. See the Futsal page for further information.
Golf
The golf programme is run as part of the RSP through the Golf Club volunteers. See Golf Club page for further information.
Squash
A weekly squash ladder is run by the Club Professional Claire Gray. All standards and abilities are welcome. You are responsible for organising matches, so it is up to you how much you play. You can find out more by contacting Claire@kiddsports.com.
Swimming
There is a new 'Learn to Swim' programme available through the Swimming Club as part of the RSP. Click on the Swimming Club page for further information.
Tennis
The programme is run as part of the RSP through the Tennis Club. See Tennis Club page for further information.
Halls Sports
Introduction
The Halls Sports Programme (HSP) is a sign up programme of activities open to all first years across both semesters. Managed in partnership by the SU President and the Halls Officer, the HSP will run mini competitions fortnightly in different activities throughout each semester in order to give first year students a chance to get active and build friendships in a fun and friendly environment.

Halls Sports Package
As part of the HSP you will receive a HSP T-Shirt @ First event, a voucher for a free smoothie at Liberties at the Students Union and a CSE Water Bottle.
How do I sign up?
Entry forms are available at reception on the Sports Centre. Completed forms must be returned to the Sports Centre Reception by Friday 17th September (Week 1). There is a one off charge of £10 per student which gives you access to all five events plus the HSP package.
Participation Programme
Aikido
A self-defence based martial art, taught three times a week by our qualified instructor Martin Livingston. The sport focuses on locks, throws and break-falls and is open to any level of experience. Sessions take place on a Tuesday from 7.15 - 9.15pm, Saturday from 7.15 - 9.15pm and a Sunday from 1.15 - 3.15pm, all in Sports Hall 2. To join you pay £10 at the Sports Centre Reception. You then pay an appropriate entry fee to the facility. If you have any more questions then direct them to Aikido@hw.ac.uk or come along to a session.
Canoe
Are you interested in paddling and want to learn more about the sport? There is a weekly session in a local pool which will allow you to develop your confidence, knowledge and experience in the canoe. This session starts at 7.30pm at Foresters High School which is just off Calder Road. A minibus will be used from the University departing at 7.00pm. A couple of student volunteers will be running the pool sessions and when possible a few weekend trips to lakes and rivers across Scotland. To join you can pay £10 at the Sports Centre Reception provided you are a member of the CSE. You can find our more information by emailing Canoe@hw.ac.uk.
The Sports Union, in partnership with Port Edgar, will be running a BCU One Star and Two Star course for anyone interested in gaining these qualifications. The Sports Union encourage any person wishing to take part in the weekly sessions to attend these courses:
- 1 Star - Sunday 30th September 2012
- £10 p/p (RSP Canoe Members Only)
- £35 p/p (Non-Members)
- 2 Star - Sunday 21st October & Sunday 28th October 2012
- £30 p/p (RSP Canoe Members Only)
- £67 p/p (Non-Members)
Note: For these courses to run a minimum of four and maximum of six persons can attend each course. If there is enough demand a second course will be delivered. To register your interest you must email Canoe@hw.ac.uk before 13th September (One Star) and 28th September (Two Star).
Jiu-Jitsu
A self-defence based martial art, taught twice a week by qualified instructors. It is effective, enjoyable and open to everyone with beginners always welcome. Sessions take place on a Friday from 7.15 - 9.15pm and a Sunday from 5.15 - 7.15pm both in Sports Hall 2. To join you can pay £10 at the Sports Centre Reception provided you are a member of the CSE. You can contact the club by emailing Jenny on jrk5@hw.ac.uk.
Tae Kwon Do (TKD)
TKD it is a 'hard' style martial art that incorporates the use of many different striking techniques (such as punches, kicks, elbows, and knees) with the aim of ending a fight using a single blow. Sessions take place on a Monday from 7.15 - 9.15pm and a Thursday from 6.15 - 8.15pm both in Sports Hall 2. To join you can pay £10 at the Sports Centre Reception provided you are a member of the CSE. For further information email TKD@hw.ac.uk or come along to a session.
One-off events
Festival of Sport and Exercise
A three day event across the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Freshers' Week that will allow you to try all the different sports and exercise classes we have at the University. This event is free of charge but some sessions require to sign up in advance. To find out more information click on our events page.
Note: There are a few sports that take place separate to the three dates due external facility availability.
Watt Sports Week
A five day event taking place over Week 12 in Semester two. You can take part in all five events as part of a team or alternatively you can apply to each individual event. The sports chosen are:
- Volleyball
- Dodgeball
- Football 7s
- Tennis
- Tag Rugby
There is a fee applied to enter each event. Entry details will be made available in Semester two.
