Mountainbiking Club

Introduction & club history

Heriot-Watt Mountain Bike Club has been running for around seven years but this is only our fifth year as an affiliated club.

We are currently the second fastest university in the UK for downhill and are consistently recognised as one of the most active clubs in Scotland.

The club is composed of riders are all styles and abilities and we aim to cater for everyone to ensure a good time is had by all.

Since January 2012 we have been supported by The Bike Chain – the best bike shop in Edinburgh! Members can enjoy discounts and club-only offers along with mechanical support when necessary. Check the shop out at www.thebikechain.co.uk or go and visit them in person at 30 Rodney Street, Edinburgh.

What does a typical season involve?

  • Weekly organised rides on Wednesday afternoons to the excellent locations we have nearby, with transport provided by the university as often as possible.
  • At least one weekend trip to further afield locations
  • Possibly some night rides depending on how many people are interested.
  • Weekly social events usually on Wednesday nights.

Our main event of the year is the student championships (BUCS), which is a weekend event comprising of downhill and cross-country events, often with a few fun extra races as well.

BUCS is the most relaxed and fun racing you will ever get to do on a bike, which makes it perfect for beginners and experienced riders alike. There is no pressure to do well and it's the best chance you will get to give racing a try and meet hundreds of like minded students from around the country.

How do I join the club?

To join the club head along to the reception at either the Sports Centre, Sports Academy or you can join online.

Membership for the Mountainbiking Club is £10, but as with all clubs, it is necessary to join the CSE first.
