Football Club

Introduction & club history

Heriot-Watt University Football Club is one largest club affiliated to the University's Sports Union and participates in both student competition and local football. Many members regard inter-university football, which is played on a Wednesday afternoon during term time, as the fundamental activity of the club.

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS)

HWUFC fields three mens and one womens team each year in the BUCS Scottish Conference which consists of nines mens leagues and two womens.

A couple of years ago, BUCS decided to introduce domestic cup competitions to the schedule and there is now a Conference Cup for the higher-rated teams and a Conference Plate for the lower-rated teams. This provides additional playing opportunities for our teams during the domestic season.

The Queen's Park Shield is the historic trophy presented to the winners of the Queens Park Shield Tournament Winners. The shield is only available to the top twelve first teams in Scotland. The Watt has a great record in recent seasons in this competition, winning five out of the last nine, and although we missed out narrowly to Edinburgh last season, we'll be doing our best again this session to bring back the magnificent shield below to the Watt trophy cabinet.

East of Scotland League

Heriot-Watt has also been a member of the East of Scotland League since 1971 and will play in the First Division of the League this season.

The East of Scotland League is a senior league, which is one of the main feeders to the Scottish League for any vacancies that arise. Many well-known sides play in the East of Scotland League.

In the Scottish Cup there have been notable wins by East League teams over Scottish League sides, especially in recent seasons, in which The Spartans has twice reached the Fourth Round. Other well known names include Whitehill Welfare, Edinburgh City, Civil Service Strollers, Gala Fairydean and Edinburgh University.

The First team are currently in the Premier Division and are considered one of the teams who could threaten for the league.

The new season has brought some changes to the league structures which has led to us entering both an U21 and U19 team into the respective EOSFL divisions. Our third team compete in the Lothian and Amateur Saturday division with our fourth team competing in the same association but on a Sunday.

Our ever emerging partnership with Currie Star Football Club gives an opportunity for anyone in the local community to participate in football from 8 years old through into the adult game.

Our graduate club, Heriot-Watt Star also compete in the Lothian and Amateur league giving an opportunity for continua involvement in the club when you graduate.
