As there is no bookshop* on Campus, the Library has an arrangement
with Blackwell's Branch
at the Edinburgh Campus for the supply of personal orders.
If you wish to order a book through Blackwell's,
you can phone the Edinburgh Campus branch on 0131-451-5287 and place
an order.

You can use the Library Catalogue to reserve stock in
the Edinburgh Campus Library (Riccarton) and have the
material delivered to Galashiels to borrow from the
Service Desk. The material comes down in the
Campus Minibus service* that travels most days between
Galashiels and Riccarton.
The procedure is the same as that for
reserving an item which is on loan. If the item is
on the shelf at Riccarton, we will normally send it to
Galashiels the next day. If the item is on loan,
we will recall it for you and send it down to Galashiels
when it becomes available. You will be sent an
email
notice when the item you requested is sent for you to
borrow. Please note that the email may arrive
ahead of the stock! You may also wish to obtain
articles from periodicals held in the Riccarton Library.
You can choose to have the complete periodical sent to
Galashiels, or you can request a photocopy of the
article you need. Give or email
the details to the Service Desk, and they will arrange
for the item to be sent. If you request a photocopy, you
will be charged the copying cost of 5p. per page when
you collect the article.
You may, of course, wish to go to the Edinburgh
Campus in person to consult or borrow material held
there. You will be made most welcome, and can
return anything you borrow there to the Service Desk in
Galashiels. You could use the Campus Minibus to go
up to Riccarton in the morning, and then return to
Galashiels in the afternoon. There is no charge
for this service, but you are advised to book a place in
advance at Campus Reception, and check the timetable.

The Library introduced
new software to provide the Inter-Library Loan Service on January
19th 1010.
You will find
information on the changes
here. The main features are an easier login and no need to
print request forms!
You will still need to obtain a voucher, but once you have quoted
the voucher code on your request, you can discard it.
The Inter Library Loan (ILL) Service is part of a national network
which enables the Library to obtain material which is not readily
available locally. The service uses software which allows
requests to be sent to, and received by, the British Library
Document Supply Centre on the same day. This ensures as fast a
service as possible. Please note that the Library uses your
University email address for communicating with you, so you should
check it regularly, or have it forwarded to another service you may
use, such as Hotmail.

This section gives information about the
Inter Library Loan Service for Heriot-Watt
staff and students. There is also a page
giving information about the
Inter Library Loan services for individuals
and institutions outside Heriot-Watt
University
If this library does not have a copy of a
book, journal or other publication you wish
to consult, the Inter Library Loan (ILL)
service can borrow it from another library
for you. The ILL service is available to all
staff and students of Heriot-Watt University
who have registered to use the service.
The ILL staff at the Edinburgh Campus
Library can give you more information about
the service: phone ext 3575; email

The Inter Library Loan Service is part of a national network which
enables the Library to obtain material for your University research,
teaching or administration which is not readily available locally.
Requests for material for leisure activities should be directed to
the public library.
The service uses software which allows requests to be sent to, and
received by, the British Library Document Supply Centre on the same
day. This ensures as fast a service as possible.
The Library has to pay for all Inter Library Loan requests; the
charges range from £4.25 to over £47.80 per request. All users of
the service are required to pay part of the cost of each request, with
the remainder coming from the Library budget. The normal charge for
each ILL request is £2.00. All requests must quote an ILL Voucher
number. Vouchers may be purchased from the ILL staff at the
Edinburgh Campus Library or at the Service Desk staff in the
Martindale Library at a cost of £2.00 each. Some types of document, such as foreign theses,
may require more than one voucher. ILL staff can advise you
about the number of vouchers required for non-standard requests.
Some Schools purchase supplies of vouchers, and allocate these to
staff and/or students according to School policy. The
ILL representatives of the two Schools based on Campus are:
- Borders Business Programme: Capri
Ross-Williams
- School of Textiles and Design: Emma Sheridan

Before you request an item through ILL, make sure that you really
need it, and check the Library Catalogue
or Journal
Lists to make sure it is not available in the Martindale Library
or Edinburgh Campus Library.
An abstract of the item may be available in one of the databases or
abstracting journals to which the Library subscribes. This may help
you to evaluate the reference and may make an inter-library loan
unnecessary. Please ask at the Service or Enquiry Desk if you need
help tracing an abstract.
If you need to refer to the item on a long-term basis, or if it is
likely to be of continuing use to others, it may be more appropriate
to purchase a copy for the Library. Please contact the Library
Manager in such a case.
Requests must be made through our
online
request service. You must be
registered
to use the ILL service, and will have to enter your Library bar code
number and ILL password to use the online request service.
- Make a separate request for each
item you require.
- Give all the details you have
EXACTLY as given in the
reference - do not either expand or
abbreviate periodical titles.
- Always make sure you can provide us
with a copy of your original source of
reference (i.e. where you got your
information from) if requested.
- Make sure you indicate your
agreement to the Copyright statement in
the space provided on the form. We
cannot process your request until this
has been done.
- Make sure you enter your
Inter-Library Loans voucher number in
the space provided on the form. We
cannot process your request until this
has been done.

Secure
Electronic Delivery (SED)
SED is a service from the
British Library which supplies
most of our ILL photocopies.
Instead of the British Library
printing a copy of an article
and posting it, they put a copy
on their web server for you to
read or print out. You will get
an email (to your University
email address) to tell you when
it is ready.
Find out more about SED and the
necessary software requirements.. |

Most requests are supplied within a week. However, it may take
longer if the item you request is out of the ordinary, or in great
demand, or if the details you supply are incomplete or inaccurate. If
there is a long delay in obtaining an item, we will keep you informed
periodically of its progress. You may ask the Inter-Library Loan staff
(telephone extension 3575, or 0131-451-3575 if the call is external)
if you wish to find out what progress has been made with any request.
You can also obtain details of your requests, including
"Completed Requests", from the Inter-Library
Loans site.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you no longer require an
item. The request can then be cancelled, the cost recovered and a
replacement voucher issued to you.
Please reply quickly to any mail from us asking for more details,
or asking whether you still need an item we have been unable to
obtain.
Photocopies of articles are sent directly to your department
(staff and postgraduates) or your term-time postal address
(undergraduates).
Online copies of articles are sent to your Heriot-Watt
email address.
Books and other requests are held in the Library for
collection. You will be notified by email* that the item is
available, and you should collect and sign for the item at the Service
Desk.
* Remember that notification is sent to your University
email address [xxx@hw.ac.uk], and be aware that it may reach you while
the request is still on route from Edinburgh to Galashiels!
Some items, such as theses, may only be used in the Library. In
such cases you will be informed that the item is available for
consultation.
The normal loan period for books is 6 weeks. Please note that
the return date given refers to receipt of the loan at the Edinburgh
Campus Library, which means returning it to the Service Desk in
Galashiels by 14.30 the day before, at the latest. If you do
not return a loan item, you will be required to pay a replacement
charge of £133.50 for items borrowed from the British Library, or the
replacement cost in other instances. Loans may sometimes be extended;
you can request this by contacting the Inter-Library Loan staff (tel.
0131-451-3575) well before the return date. You may have to
supply an additional voucher to renew the loan. A loan may be
recalled from you if someone else needs it; you must return it by the
date given on the notice sent to you.
N.B. Remember to return all items to the Library Service Desk;
never return anything direct to the lending library!

purchased from the Service Desk
- STANDALONE SCANNER - in addition to the scanning facilities
referred to above, a scanner which can handle text (via OCR –
