Collections
The Library holds a number of specialised collections. These
are:
The 3 Hour Loan Collection, which is located behind the Service
Desk, mainly contains those items in heaviest demand. All users
should make themselves familiar with the arrangements for borrowing
stock from the Collection, which may be viewed
here.
The A/V Collection includes resources in video, CD-ROM and DVD
format. It is located on the low mobile shelving unit near the
foot of the stairs on the Ground Floor of the Campus Library.
The Collection includes films of historic interest, such as
"The Great Mill Race", part of which was filmed at The Scottish
College of Textiles, which merged with Heriot-Watt University in
1998, and now forms part of the Scottish Borders Campus of Borders
College and Heriot-Watt University at Netherdale, Galashiels.
You may be able to find materials in the Collection by combining a
keyword with "video", CD-ROM", "DVD", etc.
A selection of past exam papers is available online. Please
select the School administering the exam and the relevant "Diet" in
the table below, and click on "Year" for access to the available
papers for that year. You will be required to give your
University username and email password to view the exams.

The Library has an extensive range of microfilm and microfiche
material. Much of the
Collection consists of microform copies of periodicals, which may be
found in the drawers beside the Canon Microfilm/Microfiche Scanner -
which should be used for viewing the material - in the Thesis Room at the far end of
the Ground Floor of the Library. Please ask for help if you
wish to use it! There are some additional microfiche resources
relating to art, fashion and design at the bottom of the narrow
shelf unit opposite the Scanner.
You can find out what is in the entire Collection by doing a
catalogue search, as follows: use the Other Searches option,
enter "Microforms" in the Find This: box and select Class
number list in the In: box.
The Canon Microfilm/Microfiche
Scanner is attached to a digital printer. If you do any
prints, you are kindly requested to pay 5p per copy at the Service
Desk. The Scanner is normally set up for microfiche viewing.
If you wish to view microfilm on it, please contact the Service Desk.
Alternatively, you can use the Bell and Howell Microfilm Scanner,
which is located next to the Canon machine.
Please ask for help in using the Microform Collection if required!
The Library has a small collection of patents, mainly
relating to textile technology. You can locate a particular
patent in the catalogue
by doing a Basic Search on the patent number (e.g. GB1492502)
or on keywords in the title. You can also find out what is in
the entire Collection as follows:
use the Other Searches option, enter "patents" in
the Find This: box and select Class number list in the In:
box.
The patents are located on the narrow shelf unit right at the end
of the main stock collection. You may also be able to obtain patents not in the
Collection through other services: for further details click here.
This Collection of Online Dissertations can only be accessed with
a network username and email
password. Please click on "Title" for access to PDF version of
the document. In some cases there may be additional material
(e.g. video clips) in an accompanying folder.
