Important Examination Information

Entry to the Sport and Exercise Centre

From December 2011, entry to examinations taking place in the Sport and Exercise Centre will not be permitted until 15 minutes before the start of the examination unless you are entitled to prior sight of the examination paper. As a result, it is essential that you have checked your seat number via the link below prior to the day of the examination as there will be no facility to do this outside any of the venues on the day.

Seating

Students who have examinations scheduled to take place in Sports Hall 1 (SH1), Sports Hall 2 (SH2) or James Watt Centre II (JWCII), should ensure that they have their seat number before entering the examination hall.

If you have an examination in any of these locations but do not have a seat number you will be allocated one by an invigilator before the exam.

Severe / adverse weather guidance for students taking examinations

Inline with the University’s ‘ Severe/Adverse Weather Guidance For Students’ the University will be deemed to be open for examinations unless a specific announcement is made on the HWU Website, local radio or, if it is to close early due to emergency conditions, via a message from the University Secretary.

All possible travel methods to the University should be considered however, the University does not expect any student to put themselves at risk, either at the University, or in travelling to the University.

If a student is prevented from attending an examination due to severe/adverse weather conditions, they should inform the appropriate staff within their School as soon as possible.

If a student is unable to complete an examination due to severe/adverse weather conditions, the examination board considering the student’s academic performance will be guided by the University ‘Policy on Special Circumstances in Relation to Assessment’ so as to ensure the student is not unfairly disadvantaged.

Cheating in examinations and other forms of assessment

With examinations approaching, the University Senate wishes to stress to students that cheating in examinations and other assessed work is considered to be a very serious offence.  This includes copying and using plagiarised material in examinations, project essays and dissertations.

The penalties which may be imposed by the University Discipline Committee if an allegation of cheating is admitted or proven are severe and include the following:

  • Annulment of all assessment results (including examinations and projects) from the Diet in which the incident of cheating occurred
  • Downgrading of the degree to be awarded
  • Suspension or expulsion from the University

You should be aware that reading examination papers prior to the start of an examination or taking unauthorised material into an examination is considered to be an attempt to cheat.

If you are uncertain about what constitutes plagiarism, information is provided in student handbooks and further advice may be sought from Course Directors, Tutors or Academic Mentors.

Unauthorised material/equipment

All students are reminded that they should familiarise themselves with the University regulations and policies regarding unauthorised materials and equipment.

Students should note that unauthorised calculators and dictionaries in examinations will be removed by invigilators and that the Academic Registry is not responsible for supplying calculators and replacements can not be guaranteed.

Mobile telephones and other electronic equipment must not be used in the examination hall or outwith, whilst you are under examination conditions, candidates may be liable to receive a fine and/or disciplinary proceedings if they fail to adhere to this procedure.  If a mobile phone rings during an examination, invigilators have been instructed to remove the phone in the presence of another invigilator as witness.
