Widening Access
The Wider Access Unit at Heriot-Watt
Widening Access is about supporting everyone who has the potential to succeed at university to do so,
regardless of their background. Whether you are a school pupil, college student, young person or a mature adult, it is our goal to provide you with any pre and post-application advice that you feel you need, and also with any pre and post-entry support that you feel would benefit you as you embark on your studies at Heriot-Watt.
The Wider Access Unit co-ordinates projects and activities that aim to encourage and support students and potential learners to be successful in higher education, even if they may not have traditionally thought a university education was for them. We feel it is important that students who have no family background or cultural experience of higher education, and mature learners with no formal qualifications who want a chance to enter university via an access course, gain all the information they require to enable them to make confident choices about what and how to learn.
We are proud of the fact that Heriot-Watt University has a long history of welcoming students from a variety of routes into higher education. Not surprisingly, we have a firm belief that every student who comes to Heriot-Watt is a unique individual with her or his own particular needs – our aim is to recognise this and provide exactly the right support to enable them to achieve all that they are capable of. Most important however, is that you take the first step and contact us. Whether you are currently at school or college, in employment or out of work, we would be delighted to hear from you.
More information on our services can be found in the Undergraduate Prospectus.
