Representatives from the UK's leading environment, climate change and energy bodies will join specialists from Heriot-Watt University in a major programme to discuss how best to mitigate risk in these key areas at an industry day being held at the university on Thursday 20 January 2011.
Heriot-Watt is at the forefront of pioneering research to provide innovative solutions for the effective reduction and management of risk and the event will bring together academic experts, leading figures from industry and government agency speakers.
Dr Mike Cox, Director of Knowledge Exchange, and the conference organiser, outlined the aims of the day.
“Our goal is to stimulate debate across a range of disciplines addressing risk and preventative contingencies. By including a number of areas we can explore how approaches and technologies in one may be applicable to tackling risk in another. Delegates will share their experience of what mitigating the effects of climate change might mean for business, reducing the environmental impact on us (including the impact of flooding) and how the challenges in energy exploration, extraction and delivery will affect energy generation and supply.

Professor John Mitchell OBE, Director of Climate Science at the UK Met Office and a key speaker at the event said:
"It is potentially to everyone’s advantage to manage risk in relation to climate change, energy and the environment. This is a real opportunity to share expertise and experience".
