Progress on the 2011 Staff Engagement Survey

Date:

Opportunities for People to Be the Best They Can

Since Heriot-Watt's last staff survey significant changes have been made to the Performance and Development Review (PDR) processes in direct response to feedback from staff from the 2011 staff survey.

You Said ….. you needed to understand how PDR works and how it can benefit you. The results of our 2011 survey highlighted that a number of staff across the institution were unclear how the processes worked and what the benefits of the PDR process were to them.

We Did ….. a lot of work in response to these concerns and following a period of consultation with the Unions, the University made some changes and updates to the PDR scheme for 2012. PDR forms were significantly simplified and a five point performance rating scale was introduced. Many more staff are experiencing the benefits of PDR with a significant increase in colleagues participating in PDR from 59% in 2011 to 91% in 2012, and the process is well underway for 2013.

Senior Management at Heriot-Watt is committed to the development of all staff and values and respects everyone’s contribution. The PDR process is a critical part of this, providing an opportunity for all staff to think through and express their own development and learning needs. More information on PDR can be found at http://www.hw.ac.uk/hr/pdr_index.php

Encouragingly, the 2011 Staff Survey results indicated that the University was doing well in many areas and overall responses were significantly more positive than the 2009 survey.

Further updates on progress and future survey activities will follow shortly.
