Examinations and Assessment results

Date:

Following the University's decision in 2012 to provide all students at all campuses, and those studying at partner institutions or independently, with final course results online, this will be the official method of informing you of your final course results and any examiners’ recommendation on progression or award.

Please read the information at http://www.hw.ac.uk/registry/examinations/results.htm and note the important information about accessing your results online.

Graduating students will automatically receive a hard copy of their final assessment results along with the European Diploma Supplement. All graduating students should ensure that their correspondence address is updated via Student Self Service at http://www.hw.ac.uk/selfservice in order to ensure that they receive their final results in hard copy.

Cheating in examinations and other forms of assessment

With examinations approaching, the University Senate wishes to stress to students that cheating in examinations and other assessed work is considered to be a very serious offence. This includes copying and using plagiarised material in exams, project essays and dissertations. If you are uncertain about what constitutes plagiarism, information is provided in student handbooks and further advice may be sought from Course Directors, Tutors or Academic Mentors.

The penalties which can be imposed by the University Discipline Committee if an allegation of cheating is admitted or proven are severe and include the following:

  • Annulment of all assessment results (including those for exams and projects) from the Diet in which the incident of cheating occurred Downgrading of the degree to be awarded
  • Suspension or expulsion from the University

You should be aware that reading exam papers prior to being invited to do so by the invigilator and communicating with other candidates about the content of an exam paper prior to the start of the exam are considered to be attempts to cheat, as is taking unauthorised material into an exam whether or not the material is used during the exam.

Unauthorised material/equipment

All students are reminded that they should familiarise themselves with the University regulations and policies regarding use of unauthorised material and equipment in assessments. Unauthorised calculators and dictionaries taken into examinations will be removed by invigilators; furthermore, it cannot be guaranteed that alternative approved calculators will be available If mobile phones are taken into exams, they must be switched off and left in bags. If a mobile phone rings during an exam, invigilators have been instructed to remove the phone in the presence of another invigilator as witness.

Seat numbers for Edinburgh and Scottish Borders Campus exams only

It is the responsibility of all candidates to access the seating plan available at http://www.hw.ac.uk/registry/examinations/seatingplan.htm prior to the examination diet and it is important that you take note of your seat numbers prior to arrival for your examination as no seating plans will be published outside the examination venue.
