The NSS 2013 has been open for a week and response rates are already high, particularly in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.

  • The department / discipline with the highest response rate is currently Chemistry – whose rate of 67% is over 1.5 times higher than this time last year (and means that Chemistry students will shortly receive their free £10 print quota)
  • Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics is second highest with a rate of 57%, which is almost triple the rate achieved this time last year
  • Mathematics (41%) and Computer Science (38%) are in third and fourth place

NSS

The National Student Survey (NSS) launched at Heriot-Watt University on Monday 21 January 2013.

Final year undergraduates

The NSS is an opportunity to give your opinions on what you liked about your time at Heriot-Watt University, as well as things that you feel could be improved. The survey takes only five minutes to complete. We strongly encourage you to participate – the survey is open to final year undergraduate students and if you are eligible, you will be contacted directly by Ipsos MORI, the survey organisers.

Your opinion matters

Your opinion matters to us - sharing your views on your experience with us will help us to be responsive to the needs of future Heriot-Watt University students. Based on our previous student feedback we:

  • have improved student assessment feedback
  • have targeted our investments, e.g. better Library access, more study spaces and one-stop-shop student services
  • have made timetable improvements and reviewed course content and design

Incentives

As an incentive, students in each department which achieves a 60% response rate will receive a £10 print quota allowance – and as a bigger incentive, Heriot-Watt is offering a prize draw in each School that reaches 70% participation, with the lucky winners in each School receiving £100 graduation ball tickets (or £100 cash, whichever they would prefer).

Speak up!

In 2012, 78% of our final year undergraduates responded in the NSS – one of the highest survey participation rates of any university. This year we want to do even better! Feedback from our students lets us know not only what we are doing well, but where we could improve – so share your views on your time at Heriot-Watt and help us improve the experience for future students!
