NICE WEB SITE

In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site Archive.

Online Planning Resources
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/sbe/planbiblios/
Any site which helps me to answer two reference enquiries in the same week, like this one did, deserves to be regarded as a Nice Web Site. Although aimed at students at the University of Nottingham, these bibliographies and web site links are are available to others.

"The lists particularly focus on items on planning in England (and especially the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire areas) rather than other parts of the UK, although some important items from Wales and Scotland are also included. Several of the reading lists contain a specific section on (other) European / International material."

JOURNAL REVIEW

Review of:

Title: Journal of Internet Commerce
Publisher: Internet Practice Press (IPP)
Imprint of Haworth Press
10 Alice Street
Binghamton
NY 13904-1580
ISSN: 1533-2861

This is the first issue of a new journal dedicated to Internet Commerce.

The articles are mainly academic studies, with the first issue covering areas such as: why Internet businesses fail, a comparison of privacy concerns between the US and China, consumer perception of on-line credit card theft, student perceptions of internet commerce, and the role of XML in preparing students for a career in e-commerce and data warehousing.

E-Commerce is a difficult field for an academic journal to cover, as it is hard to see who the papers would be aimed at. For example, a study on consumer perception of on-line credit card theft may be useful for a marketer, or a company considering setting up in e-commerce, but would they be willing to trawl through a heavily academic study? The subject coverage is also fairly broad. Would someone setting up an e-commerce company be interested in the role of XML for students? There are certainly some areas which are useful to study, such as why dotcoms fail. However, there is nothing new in this study, most of which could have been pieced together from common sense and reading a decent newspaper.

Overall, I found I just couldn’t get excited by the subjects or the way in which they were covered. Admittedly, not working in e-commerce, I may be missing the point. However, I can’t quite imagine anyone who is working in e-commerce having the time or patience to read academic studies either, especially as there is nothing which appears to add much to the practical understanding of the area.

To sum up, this is the kind of journal you might see cited once in a while in the business or technology pages of a newspaper, if a study produces some results which might be of interest to people working in the field. It will also undoubtedly be useful to other academics doing studies into e-commerce.

Otherwise, what with life being so short, and there being so much else to read…
