COMMENT

This is a double issue of the Internet Resources Newsletter, for August and September.

Pinakes: A Subject Launchpad
http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/pinakes/pinakes.html

We've noted that the following subject gateways are no longer being maintained:

Agrigate
http://www.agrigate.edu.au/

EdWeb
http://www.edwebproject.org/

DutchESS
http://www.kb.nl/dutchess/

The use and usefulness of subject gateways seems to be diminishing, just as the use of subject-based repositories is growing. We've therefore made some changes to Pinakes: A subject Launchpad. We've deleted some subject gateways, and will be adding a number of subject-based repositories, so that Pinakes will remain a good subject launchpad to what's available.

Journal Table of Content RSS feeds

Have you noticed how many journal publishers are now producing RSS feeds for their journal's Table of Contents? The University of Liverpool Library maintain a list at: http://www.liv.ac.uk/Library/techserv/ejrnl/rss.html

Free Our Data

http://www.freeourdata.org.uk/

“On March 9 2006 the Guardian's Technology supplement carried an article called "Give us back our crown jewels". The argument is simple: government-funded and approved agencies such as the Ordnance Survey and UK Hydrographic Office and Highways Agency collect data using our funds, but then charge users and companies for access to it. That restricts innovation and artificially restricts the number and variety of organisations that can offer services based on that most useful data - which our taxes have helped to collect. Making that data available for free - rather as commercial companies such as Amazon and Google do with their catalog and maps data - would vastly expand the range of services available.”

NICE WEB SITE

In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site Archive.

BOOK REVIEW

How to do Research: A Practical Guide to Designing and Managing Research Projects, Nick Moore
Facet Publishing, London: 2006. Revised 3rd edition.
ISBN-13: 978-1-85604-594-0 / ISBN-10: 1-85604-594-3 / £24.95

Nick Moore’s latest “How to do Research” offers wisdom and clarity on the essentials of the research process. Frequently fraught with tension and beset with difficulties, the process of researching can be far from smooth. In this context, Moore’s text offers a calm voice of reason based on a wealth of research experience - as practitioner, academic and communicator.

Moore ’s introduction states that the book is concerned with social research - described as research about people, institutions and the relationship between them. That said, much of the content will be useful for any researcher. Although the cover notes describe this book as invaluable to “both new and experienced researchers” the former will probably find it of most use. However, the book should have a wide ranging audience including those in organisations tasked with in-house research, undergraduate or postgraduate students and academic researchers.

The subtitle of the book has changed from the previous 1999 version from “complete guide” to “practical guide”. This change perhaps more accurately reflects the content. Rather than being a comprehensive manual Moore offers a medium-scale map of the research process. Research fundamentals are introduced. The differences between qualitative and quantitative data; results, conclusions and recommendations, and data, information and knowledge are explained. Details of statistical analysis are kept to a minimum with brief descriptions of crosstabs, multivariate analysis and statistical significance.

Moore divides the book into two parts. Part 1 covers the research process with chapters on developing the research objectives; designing and planning the study, writing the proposal; obtaining financial support; managing the project; drawing conclusions and making recommendations; writing the report and disseminating the results. Part 2 covers research methods with chapters on desk research and its analysis and on collecting and analysing quantitative and qualitative data. Updated throughout, this revision includes new sections on sub-contracting, ethical issues and internet-based and in-house research. Each chapter is rounded off with a neat summary. There is a reading list (with brief but helpful annotation) and a sample research proposal as an appendix.

Moore succeeds in giving the reader a realistic picture of research which is pragmatic but reassuring in its approach. The text covers constraints and barriers which may have to be overcome - from financial problems to information overload. The content is anchored to real life research situations with key points illustrated with examples drawn from experience. Problem areas common to many research ventures are identified. Readers will benefit from Moore’s experience such as his suggestion that if research aims cannot be expressed in a single sentence then the proposed research is probably too complex or unfocused to succeed; his advocacy of minimalism in research design; and his call to resist the urge to gather non-essential data “while you’re at it”.

The book’s strengths lie in its accessible style and well structured format with content designed not to overload the reader. The result is a very readable text which also allows ease of browsing and searching. It is a book that can be read in its entirety or dipped in to as research progresses when reminders or reassurances are needed. While covering a great deal, Moore succeeds in keeping his message clear – keep it simple, don’t over complicate, slice the project up into manageable, sequential tasks, plan meticulously and build a solid framework around which everything can fit. While distinct chapters separate stages of the project, Moore also succeeds in illustrating the interdependence of each stage, particularly emphasising how early mistakes can escalate as projects develop and increase in complexity.

Touching on ethics to average sentence length to use in the report, the coverage of the book is wide ranging. However, there is perhaps a slight imbalance in the depth to which topics are covered. Some sections are relatively broad brush (e.g. ethics and dissemination) while others go in to greater detail (e.g. costing). Whilst a lot of what is written in this respect may appear to be common sense (e.g. costing the number of forms, letters, envelopes and stamps required for a 200 questionnaire mail out), it is helpful and others sections might have benefited from a similar treatment.

In this book, Moore provides a calm and sensible outline of how to do research. It is steady and reassuring. It is clear, uncomplicated, systematic and structured reflecting Moore’s suggested approach to research. In short, if you want to get it together before you start a research project or want to keep it together during your research, keep this book to hand.

Nick Moore is Managing Director of Acumen Research and Consultancy Ltd and Visiting Professor at the University of Brighton. He is widely published and practiced in the field of research and information management.
