Here we are, once again, at the beginning of a new academic year. If you're looking for information, a good place to start is always Pinakes: A Subject Launchpad http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/pinakes/pinakes.html Described recently by one user as "a wonderful resource", Pinakes links to about 50 freely available major subject gateways covering just about all subjects.

And at the start of a new academic year, a special mention for The RDN Virtual Training Suite http://www.vts.rdn.ac.uk/ which offers 60 free subject guides to using the Internet for research.

NICE WEB SITE

In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site Archive.

Petroleum Journals Online

http://petroleumjournalsonline.com/journals/

There's not much actual content at this site yet, but the motives are excellent. These journals provide free and unrestricted access to the web-based contents on the principle that "removing access barriers to literature gives readers extraordinary power to find and make use of relevant literature, and that it gives authors and their works vast and measurable new visibility, readership, and impact."

Areas covered include: petrophysics, production geology, drilling, production, reservoir engineering, and petroleum management and economics.

PRESS RELEASES

**** SAGE Publications Contributes Journals to Developing World Research Initiative ****

INASP and SAGE team up to provide online access to hundreds of SAGE's publications for research institutions in developing countries.

SAGE Publications is delighted to announce the signing of an agreement with the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) for 2006. Under the terms of the agreement, SAGE will provide online access to more than 300 SAGE journals to research institutions in 66 of the world's less developed countries, either free of charge or for greatly subsidized rates.

This agreement was arranged via the Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information (PERI), an INASP initiative. This programme supports capacity building in the research sector of developing countries by strengthening the production, access and dissemination of information and knowledge.

For a full list of countries whose researchers will benefit from this agreement with SAGE, see the INASP website at http://www.inasp.info/peri/countries.shtml

"The objectives of the PERI programme fit closely with SAGE's core company values, which aim to support the dissemination of teaching and research on a global scale," commented Stephen Barr, Managing Director of SAGE UK. "We are delighted to have been invited to participate in this important program."

About SAGE
SAGE Publications is a leading international publisher of journals, books, and electronic media for scholarly, educational, and professional markets. Since 1965, SAGE (http://www.sagepublications.com) has helped inform and educate a global community of scholars, practitioners, researchers, and students.

About INASP
INASP was established in 1992 by the International Council for Science
(ICSU) to improve access to information and knowledge through a commitment to capacity building in emerging and developing countries. Initially based within the International African Institute, the organization moved to its own premises in Oxford UK in June 1996. http://www.inasp.info

**** Connotea wins award for publishing innovation ****

Connotea, a free online reference management service for scientists, developed by Nature Publishing Group, has won the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) Award for Publishing Innovation.  This international award is presented annually to products that display 'a significantly innovative approach to any aspect of publication', as judged by a panel of independent experts.  The award coincides with the release of the full version of Connotea.

"The web offers vast new opportunities for publishers to serve scientists and other scholars in ways that were unimaginable in the print-only world. Connotea is a good example of that. We have taken some of the latest technical and social trends on the web - notably social bookmarking and tagging - and applied them in a way that we hope scientists will find useful for managing and discovering information. We are delighted and honored that this approach has been recognized by the ALPSP," said Timo Hannay, Director of Web Publishing.

Connotea is a free online social bookmarking tool developed by NPG. It allows users to store their web links online, enabling them to be accessed from any web browser, and to organize them using individually chosen tags. The site also allows users to share their links with others and discover links to new publications or other resources relevant to their interests.

Connotea, which went live in 'beta' form in December 2004, is now being launched in its full form. This follows a series of major upgrades to enhance its functionality. Recent additions include DOI support, user groups and extended privacy options. These new features mean, for example, that users can bookmark a paper by simply highlighting its DOI in their browser, or even by entering the DOI of a paper they are reading in print. They can then choose to share this bookmark with everyone or privately within a group.

NPG has released an updated version of Connotea Code, the source code behind Connotea, which now includes these latest features.  Connotea Code is freely available to use under an open source license and can be downloaded from http://connotea.sourceforge.net/.

NPG is a global company, with headquarters in London and offices in New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, Boston, Tokyo, Paris, Munich and Basingstoke. For more information, please go to http://www.nature.com.

BOOK REVIEW

The New Walford Guide to Reference Resources
Volume 1: Science, Technology & Medicine
Ray Lester, Editor-in-Chief
Facet Publishing, June 2005
848pp; hardback; 1-85604-495
£149.95

(Volume 2: Social Sciences and Volume 3: Arts, Humanities and General Reference)

The New Walford (TNW) is a series of volumes designed to succeed Walford's Guide to Reference Material, which was first published in 1959. Five years on from the eighth and last edition of Walford's Guide to Reference Materials in 2000 the New Walford has been completely revised in both structure and content.

TNW no longer uses the universal decimal classification but is organised by subject areas. The structure has been simplified to give three main subject areas (science, technology and medicine) each with 12 sub-groups.  The organisation of TNW facilitates browsing. There are also two indexes (author/title and topic) to help with searching.

TNW continues to provide what its Editor-in-Chief, Dr Ray Lester, describes as 'starter packs' of key reference resources in particular subjects.  However, the attraction of the New Walford is that it has been re-engineered for the hybrid information world.  It fully reflects the availability of electronic information sources while not neglecting print.  Print encyclopedias, handbooks and dictionaries continue to be listed.  However, portals, digital data, image & text collections, weblogs and newsfeeds are also now included in its 13 resource categories.

The listings are international in scope and aim to cover leading reference works with broad utility across organisations. For most subjects, sources included reflect mainstream opinion. On controversial subjects sources offering alternative opinions are also included.

TNW is a key resource for library and information professionals - particularly those involved in enquiry work or who are responsible for building up or updating subject-based reference collections.  However, students and researchers will also find TNW accessible and useful. All should find the volume easy to use and navigate.  Indeed, TNW has been designed by a team of 16 subject specialists for ease of use by the novice or non-specialist.  It has clear visual layout, offers a concise and clear quick start guide and provides introductory essays for some sections highlighting key features of the subject.  It is a pleasure to use.

TNW is, as Facet Publishing's own promotional material describes it,  . . . . "your paper portal to the world of reference resources".

APPRECIATION

I was very saddened to hear of the death of Professor Stan Made, from the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo, in a car accident earlier this year. Some years ago I worked alongside Stan for a while in the University of Botswana.

Stan was an extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable library professional, and will be much missed.
