There's a slight travel theme to this issue of Internet Resources Newsletter. Several low cost carriers and other travel sites are listed in the Get a life! Leisure Time section, and included in this month's new and notable web sites are some from exotic lands. Some travel blogs are mentioned in the Blogorama section.

I attended the JISC Conference http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=jisc_conf_news_240304 on 23 March, in Birmingham. (The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) supports further and higher education by providing strategic guidance, advice and opportunities to use Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to support teaching, learning, research and administration. JISC is funded by all the UK post-16 and higher education funding councils). This year's conference was really good, with informative and sometimes entertaining presentations. Sir Ron Cooke, JISC Chair, welcomed over 800 delegates to the Conference and Lynne Brindley, Chief Executive, The British Library, gave the keynote presentation.

JORUM learning objects project report out
The report on the JORUM Scoping and Technical Appraisal Study is now out. The project is funded by the JISC to scope a service to be launched in August 2005. It will offer access for teaching and support staff in all UK F/HEIs to re-usable learning objects and teaching support materials held in a repository.

In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention. In line with the travel theme of this month's issue, the Nice Web Site is a very worthy cause which gives access to African published research.

This site, which is supported by INASP, provides tables of contents and and abstracts from over 180 African-published peer-reviewed journals, with links to the full text if available. All access is free.

**** First instalment of new NLN materials available ****

The NLN Materials Team is pleased to announce that the first batches of new, free, interactive e-learning materials are now available online.

The new resources, developed as part of the third round of NLN materials, cover topics in General Art & Design, and Biology and Sports Science.

The materials can be accessed through the NLN Materials website [www.nln.ac.uk/materials]. Further units in these and many other subject areas will be released over the coming months, on the first Tuesday of the month.

The website also provides a host of other resources to support tutors in making the most of the NLN materials, including lists of the learning objects now online, and a complete list of the Round 3 subjects currently in development.

If you've recently upgraded to windows XP (home edition), and are finding it tricky to get to grips with the changes, or have just got your first computer at home, this is an excellent book for talking you though the XP system. It's written in simple step-by-step terms and has clear, coloured pictures of each screen as well.

As would be expected, it begins with the basics, getting started, understanding the desk top, windows, programmes and menus. It then goes through programmes in more detail, personalising windows, maintaining the system, setting up security and home networking.

The screen shots are far better than those in most books, with each screen very clear, and arrows pointing to the correct boxes. The slight problem with this is that it means there is little space for explanations so, on occasion, the book can fall between two stools – being perhaps a little too simple for those who are reasonably familiar with the system but want some additional help on certain aspects, while still using terms that may appear jargon to an unfamiliar user. That said, it would be difficult to produce a manageable sized book, simply on Windows XP, which didn't do that, and this book is certainly both simple to follow, comprehensive, and a good size. In addition, all jargon is explained, either earlier or in the glossary at the end. At the bottom of each page, there is also a brief introduction to the topic which gives a brief explanation, and some tips.

Dr Chowdhury has published extensively on the subject of information retrieval, and five years after the first edition of this work has provided us with an updated and very solid introduction to the topic.

The remit of this book is broader than the same author's Information sources and searching on the World Wide Web which was reveiwed in Issue 86 of IRN. Here are close to 500 pages split into twenty-three chapters covering everything from the basic concepts of information retrieval systems (purpose, functions and components), through cataloguing principles and metadata, to trends in information retrieval. The final chapter, on trends, is more of a review of past and present research than a look to the future.

This is a scholarly, thorough and well-referenced work. Each chapter includes a fairly lengthy list of references to printed and online sources which will be useful for those looking for further reading. Introduction to modern information retrieval is aimed at an international audience, and unlike some other similar books it includes examples and citations from non-US sources.

Although this book will be of interest to anyone involved with information retrieval, its prime use is as an excellent text book for those studying library and information science at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Once in a blue moon a book comes along which really makes you sit up straight. For me, The Zanzibar Chest is one. I wish everyone could read this book. It is entertaining, disturbing, gripping, well-written, and informative.

Aiden Hartley worked as a foreign correspondent for Reuters in the 1980s and 90s and covered various conflicts in Africa and Bosnia. Amongst other interesting things, The Zanzibar Chest relates some of his first hand experiences.

I spent just over four years in various parts of Africa during the same period, so some of the settings are familiar, but Hartley experienced more on a typical day before breakfast than I did in most of my time on the continent. The following quotation is not typical, but gives a bit of a flavour of his time during the war in Rwanda:

"Anaesthetics were basic and in short supply, no cocktails. When you whacked a bump of ketamine into a guy he began hallucinating right there on the slab. He swatted imaginary flies, flipped out on his own out-of-body experience, believing he'd arrived in heaven and the doe-eyed virgins were feeding him grapes for eternity. No wonder he was pissed off with the doctors when he woke up to find he was still a Hutu axe murderer except that his legs had been chopped off at the knees and all his mates were scurrying for the border."

I recently used this service to book a cross-channel ferry. It was by far the easiest booking site to use, and it also appeared to be the cheapest.
