COMMENT

Internet Resources Newsletter by email and RSS

Over 20,000 people now subscribe to the free email version of this Newsletter. Very many thanks go to Willco who distribute the email version. To subscribe, at no cost, go to http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/irn.html

The Internet Resources Newsletter has an RSS feed. This means that you can read its 'headlines' (essentially the Table of Contents) through a news feedreader, or service such as Bloglines' My Blogs, and then link through to the sections of interest. The RSS feed is available at: http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/irn.rss This is a .rss file and therefore it must be processed (or 'parsed') before it can be displayed. The easiest way to do this is via Bloglines' My Blogs, or via a feedreader, such as those listed in the RSS Primer.

Willco have a new initiative called VIP http://www.vivavip.com/ VIP is a monthly publication focussing on business information products and information people. Well worth investigation.

NICE WEB SITE

In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site Archive.

Big List of Blog Search Engines

BOOK REVIEW

Review of: Digitizing Collections: Strategic issues for the information manager
Lorna M. Hughes
Facet Publishing (digital futures series)
1-85604-466-1
£39.95 (£31.96 to CILIP Members)

The first quotation in this book very adequately sums up digitisation:

"The conversion of all sorts of cultural contents into bits and bytes opens up a completely new dimension of reaching traditional and new audiences by providing access to cultural heritage resources in ways unimaginable a decade ago"

Indeed, many libraries and museums are already using digitisation to make collections - especially of rare or fragile material - available to a greater audience than could ever have been possible before, and with far greater ease. Projects such as the British Library's Beowulf is a prime example.

This book, which is primarily aimed at librarians, archivists and museum professionals, examines the whole process of digitisation. It is split into two sections, the first dealing with the more strategic aspects: costs and benefits; the potentials; why and when to digitise (and when not to); selecting materials; copyright issues; staffing; project management; and the importance of collaboration. The second section deals with the more practical issues of planning and funding, managing the project, handling rare and fragile materials, and the digitisation of audio, text and images.

The text is easy to read, and peppered with interesting examples of different kinds of projects undertaken by libraries and museums. There are also more detailed case studies, particularly in the second section. It is also very practical, going into great detail about choosing material to digitise, and how to weigh up the costs and benefits, as well as going through the reasons frequently given for digitising which are simply the wrong reasons. There is also much practical advice on the actual process of digitisation, and the handling of fragile material.

I would certainly recommend this book to anyone working within libraries and museums as it gives many ideas for moving forward into a digitised world, while in no way idealising the process or suggesting it is always the best answer. I would also recommend it to students or anyone interested in the area, as it provides an excellent guide to the field. I found reading it made me feel in many ways positive and excited about the potential, and the rapidly changing methods to access educational and historical collections. Other parts made me feel a little pessimistic, for example the fact that many museums are using digitisation to overcome the fact that slashed school budgets no longer allow for museum trips. Overall though, a very worthwhile book for anyone with and interest in the subject.

APPRECIATION

Steve Mwiyeriwa

I was very saddened to hear of the passing, in October, of Steve Mwiyeriwa, the long serving University of Malawi Librarian, with whom I worked for two years in Zomba in the mid 80s. Steve was an inspiring boss, who knew how to get the most out of his staff.

I remember clearly the first time I met him. Soon after arriving in Zomba I was invited to Steve's house for dinner, along with two other senior members of the library staff. I was expecting a formal meal and dressed accordingly, and for some reason I was quite anxious about keeping to the correct protocols. On arrival, Steve bounced into the room dressed in an Arsenal t-shirt and baseball hat, welcomed everyone and offered them a beer, and it immediately became obvious that here was someone who was immensely approachable and unpretentious. It was a priviledge to work with Steve, and all of us in Zomba learned a great deal from him. He will be much missed.
