Electronic Journals
Electronic journals are basically journals that allow articles to be accessed via the Web, using a standard Web browser.
The Library currently provides access to over 2,700 electronic journals. In some cases these are electronic versions of journals that are subscribed to in printed form, but there are also an increasing number of journals available only in electronic form.
Access to these journals is usually authenticated either by ip address (ie: the ip address of the PC will be checked to ensure that it is located on a Heriot-Watt campus) or the Athens authentication system.
There will be no problems in accessing the electronic journals from on-campus, but the authentication method will, in some cases, dictate how they can be accessed from off-campus. For information on how to connect to electronic journals services from off-campus, click here.
Printed (Hardcopy) Journals
The University Library subsribes to a large number of printed (ie: hardcopy) academic journals. The journals available at each campus library reflects the subjects taught at that campus: Riccarton (Edinburgh) Campus & Scottish Borders (Galashiels) Campus.
On the library shelves, periodicals are arranged by Class Numbers and then alphabetically by title within these Class Numbers.
The majority of the Periodicals can be borrowed for a week at a time, so long as they are not taken from the Current Periodicals shelves.

Science Periodicals are shelved on Level 4. These include periodicals for the following subjects:

Engineering Periodicals are also shelved on Level 4. These include periodicals for the following subjects:

The most recent copies of periodicals are kept on the Current Periodicals shelves on Level 2.
Scottish Borders Campus:
The current issue of most periodicals are displayed by broad subject category (e.g. "Art/Design") in the Display Area on the 1st Floor - with the exception of recent issues of some key Textile and Fashion publications, including "forecasting services", which are kept behind the Service Desk on the Ground Floor.
All back runs of periodicals are shelved alphabetically by title in one sequence on the Ground Floor.
