Athens Authentication Service

The Athens Authentication Service provides individual usernames and passwords for a number of electronic resources.  Please note: Athens is only available to staff and students of Heriot-Watt University.
 

Registration

Athens requires that each user register and create a personal Athens account.  Please note:  Before you register:

  1. You need to know your Heriot-Watt University email address.  If you aren't sure what your HW email address is, please contact the UICS Help Desk (ex. 4045, ITHelp@hw.ac.uk).
     
  2. You need to be using a computer which is either located on-campus, or is using the HW VPN (Virtual Private Network).

To register:

  1. Ask at the Library Service Desk for an Athens self-registration username and password. This will allow you to create an Athens personal account.
     
  2. Connect to the Internet and go to Athens: www.athensams.net
     
  3. Click on MyAthens (under 'Log on to').
     
  4. In the Login box, enter the self-registration username and password, and click on Login.
     
  5. Fill in the onscreen form.  You only need to fill in Part 1: Account Details.
     
  6. Your username will consist of the 6 letters displayed to the left of the text box, plus whatever you enter in the box.
     
  7. Your password must be at least 6 characters long, and contain at least one letter and one numeral.
     
  8. Remember that your password is cAsE-sEnSiTiVe.
     
  9. When you've finished, click on Submit details. After a short delay, a message will appear on screen saying "Personal account hwu.... created !".
     
  10. You will be sent an email with details of your account.

You may now use your Athens personal username and password for any of the Athens authenticated services that Heriot-Watt University subscribes to.  Please note that you do NOT need to return to the Athens website again. To access Athens authenticated services, go to the Electronic Resources page.

If you forget or mislay your personal account details, either:

  • Create another personal account (but the username will have to be different from the original account).
     
  • Use the form below to contact the HW Athens administrator.
