Each month my cable TV supplier sends me a magazine with forthcoming TV listings. Inside last month's issue was an insert advertising some of the company's services, which include access to the Internet. This insert explained how to find information on the Internet: "...it's so easy. When you need information but don't know where to look, try a search engine...try Excite, HotBot, Yahoo!, Lycos."

If only it was so easy. I'm interested in Process Engineering, so I looked in HotBot, and...well, the 794,299 matches it found should certainly keep me busy! I don't have time to scan through such a large number of sites. Presumably there are many other people who find these search engines very good for locating relevant sites on extremely specific topics, but not so good for finding good resources on more general subjects. So I got together with Dave Bond and we came up with PINAKES: A Subject Launchpad. PINAKES points towards some of the excellent subject gateways which are currently available. These gateways, in turn, link to the best resources in their subject areas and are therefore very good tools for finding quality resources. If you want to find good resources in academic subjects without having to plough through long lists, try using the links from the PINAKES page.
