_INTERNET RESOURCES_ Newsletter
Issue 4 - January 1995
Edited by:
Roddy MacLeod (libram@bonaly.hw.ac.uk) and Gordon Andrew
(libgra@bonaly.hw.ac.uk)
Table of Contents:
Firstly, a 'guid New Year' (as we say in Scotland) to all readers of
this Newsletter.
This is the fourth issue of the _INTERNET RESOURCES_ Newsletter.
The response to previous issues has been positive, and we have received
many messages from within and without Heriot-Watt (from as far away as
New Zealand, and even China) about its usefulness. The primary function
of the Newsletter is to notify staff and students of Heriot-Watt
University about new Internet resources, and also to publicise the
information retrieval possibilities of the Internet throughout the
University. This we will continue to do, always with an emphasis on
academic resources, and UK resources. The Newsletter is also made
available outside the University to anyone who may be interested. The
editors are always pleased to receive news about new resources of
interest.

SALSER is an index of titles of journals and other serials held in
Scottish academic and research libraries. It covers the 15 University
libraries, the National Library of Scotland and the City libraries of
Edinburgh and Glasgow; also included are union lists of the Edinburgh
Libraries Federation (which includes the 3 Universities and the NLS)
and the Scottish Colleges of Education.
With a single search you can find titles in one library, or any
combination of libraries of your choice.
You can use also use SALSER to connect to the libraries' online
catalogues (OPACs) for more detailed holdings information. There is
also a library directory giving useful information about addresses,
phone numbers, opening hours and lending services.
Accessing SALSER
The SALSER database consists of separate files for each library,
with access using both World Wide Web and Gopher servers, hosted at the
University of Edinburgh. Both of these servers are accessible through
JANET and the Internet.
For those you do not have Gopher or WWW clients, Telnet or PAD
access is also provided to the SALSER WWW server:
Telnet: festival.ed.ac.uk
PAD: 000015000009
Login: as salser
Password: press return key
If you have any comments or questions about SALSER, please contact:

More computing power for BIDS:
The current 3 processor configuration will be replaced with 6 new
processors, each more powerful than the old ones. The net effect is
expected to be at least a doubling of capacity. In addition the main
store capacity will be doubled from 512 Mbytes to 1 Gbyte. An exact date
is not yet available, but the new hardware is expected imminently
In addition, some extra store has been added to the computer systems
that service the BIDS Gateway. This should help with the poor response
that has been reported for that part of the service.
Switch-off of the old BIDS-ISI service:
As soon as the new hardware described above has been installed and
tested, we will be taking away access to the ISI Citation Indexes
(Science, Social Sciences and Arts & Humanities) on the old system. The
old system will continue to run with ISTP only for some time to come
(see timetable below).
Progress with the new BIDS ISI service:
Issues has now been added to the new service, leaving only ISTP and
document ordering as outstanding facilities.
Other Databases:
A more detailed timetable has now been drawn up for the migration of
our remaining services to the new kit. The provisional timetable is as
follows:
- Compendex* Plus - mid May
- ISTP (ISI) - end June

Heriot-Watt University Library has offered an Online Search Service
for many years. Online searching is an interactive process by which
databases of information held on remote computers can be searched. The
information in the databases tends to be of three main types:
- References to published literature (for example references to
articles, books, reports, conference proceddings, patents, etc).
- Numerical or factual information (for example, financial
information about companies, chemical data, etc).
- The full text of documents.
An online search can be useful for someone who is starting a project
or research topic, or a thesis or dissertation; or someone who is
looking for reference-type information. An online search can be seen as
a form of literature searching. Online searching can also be useed to
keep up to date with the most recent publications in any subject area.
Several large and useful online databases are available, free of
charge, to all members of Heriot-Watt University, through the BIDS and
UnCover services, but MANY MORE (over 500) databases are available
through the Library's Online Search Service.
If you are looking for literature in a specialised subject area, and
want to extend your search beyond the BIDS and UnCover databases, you
should consider applying for an Online Search. Forms are available from
the Library Service Desk, and more information is available from the
Faculty Librarians, or from libhelp (libhelp@bonaly.hw) the Library e-mail
help desk.
For staff and students of Heriot-Watt,the Library bears the cost of
telecommunications charges and subscriptions to database providers.
Users of the Online Search Service pay the direct costs involved. Due
to academic discounts, in many cases these are very low.
External readers pay the full costs of the online search, plus a
service charge.
Normally the Faculty Librarians, who have received training, will
make the online search, after discussing the search topic.
More information about some of the information providers is
available on the Internet:
- ESA-IRS
- This host provides access to a large collection of databases
containing more than 50 million references on all subjects. Databases
of particular interest to researchers at Heriot-Watt include:
- Dialog
- Dialog is one of the largest Online hosts, with several hundred
databases available. Some of the most relevant databases to Heriot-Watt
researchers include: BIOSIS (Biological Abstracts), Derwent World
Patents Index, TRIS (Transportation), Aquatic Science and Fisheries
Abstracts, Textline: Global News, Dissertation Abstracts International.
- STN International
- STN International is a very popular online host with members of
Heriot-Watt, due to the educational discounts available through the
service and the good selection of databases on the service. These
include:
Many more databases are available from each host, and the Library
also has access to other hosts with more databases.
Click
here for more information about the Library's Online Search
Service.

The following are not necessarily new, they are not listed in any
particular order, and this is by no means a complete listing, however
they look like they could be of interest to researchers at Heriot-Watt
University. (RM)

In issue 3 of this Neswletter, we listed some of the many printed
sources of information about the Internet. The following is an addition
to the list.
- EDUCOM REVIEW
Periodicals 370 Level 1This is published bimonthly by a
non-profit consortium of about 600 colleges and universities.
Subscription information from: pubs@educom.edu
The subtitle of this periodical is "Learning, Communications and
Information Technology" so it is not entirely dedicated to the
Internet. Recent articles have covered "Billboards on the Information
Highway", "Planning for the National Electronic Library" and "Is the
Information Superhighway a Public Good". Each issue has a useful
"TechWatch" section. American in outlook.
