Together with some colleagues from JISC and the eLib Programme, I attended the CNI (Coalition for Networked Information) Fall meeting in Minneapolis from 25 to 27 October, where we met with representatives of the SCOUT Report to investigate potential synergy between their activities and the work of the UK subject gateways such as EEVL, for Engineering, ADAM, for Art, Design, Architecture & Media, Biz/ed, for Business Education, History, for History, CAIN, for Conflict studies, OMNI, for Medical Information, RUDI, for Urban Design, SOSIG, for Social Sciences, and the Arts and Humanities Data Service

Attendance at CNII was very useful to hear of their current work and to attend the new Executive Director's, Cliff Lynch, presentation of CNI's current concerns. Many of the items on their agenda are, of course, US-specific, but he outlined three broad areas that CNI will be addressing over the next year. The first of these is developing networked information content, particularly from the arts, humanities and cultural heritage community, and dealing with the issues of metadata and digital preservation. The second area is the transformation of organisations, professions and individuals in order to enable them to make effective use of networked information. The third area is developing the infrastructure, both in the areas of technology and software, and in particular, CNI's input into Internet2 applications.

The meeting with the staff of SCOUT was benificial to all participants and has led to commitments on both sides to explore ways of working together, including sharing experiences of selection criteria for quality sites and implementing cross-searching to allow truly world-wide gateways to quality subject resources.
