Random quotes
"Web 2.0, the Social Web, has had a profound effect on behaviours, particularly those of young people whose
medium and metier it is. They inhabit it with ease and it has led them to a strong sense of communities of interest
linked in their own web spaces, and to a disposition to share and participate. It has also led them to impatience – a
preference for quick answers – and to a casual approach to evaluating information and attributing it and also to
copyright and legal constraints." From:
Higher Education in a Web 2.0 World http://www.jisc.ac.uk/publications/documents/heweb2.aspx
"And the jury is still out on whether such a highly decentralised system of creating databases of articles, which are not the official 'article of record' or 'minutes of', can be searched effectively through a single point of access, GoogleScholar notwithstanding." From: Does open access really pay? David Brown, Library & Information Update, May 2009, p.26.
If web 2.0 flattens everything to the level of whim and self-actualisation, then it will have done more harm than good." From:

In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites will often be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site Archive.
Springer Exemplar
http://www.springerexemplar.com/index.aspx
Exemplar lets you search for and then see how a particular term or phrase is used in peer-reviewed material published by Springer. A limitation is that this is searching only Springer content, but Springer do publish a large amount of material, and it's quite a nice, simple interface. I like the useful Subject, Country and Journal category filters that appear with search results. There's also a year of publication visualiser. Although it might result in more clutter, I feel that the search keyword should be returned within a bit more context.
