Scotland

Scottish Government: Official Statistics
The devolved government for Scotland is responsible for most of the issues of day-to-day concern to the people of Scotland, including health, education, justice, rural affairs, and transport.  Statistics are divided into the following topics:

Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural
Statistical reports and economic information on agriculture and fisheries, including results from the main agricultural census and surveys, information on farming incomes and the annual report of sea fisheries statistics.

Business, Enterprise and Energy
Statistics, analysis and research on: Scottish business stock; business financial performance; R&D and innovation; knowledge transfer from Higher Education; and energy generation.

Children and Young People
Links to regular sources of statistics on children, young people and local authority social work services staffing in Scotland.

Crime and Justice
Statistical information and support relating to police and community safety, court affairs and offenders, prisons and matters relating to civil and international law.

Economy
Information on how to access statistics relating to the Economy including information on GDP, input-output tables and exports.

Environment
The Scottish Government collects few statistics on the environment, but collates and publishes statistics from various sources. This section provides environmental statistics for Scotland together with commentary, metadata and links to sources of additional information.

Health and Community Care
Statistics and links to sources of data on the health of people in Scotland, and NHS and Local Authority data on the provision and use of health and community care services in Scotland. More detailed statistics on health, including NHS costs and workforce, can be obtained from Information Services Division of NHS Scotland. The Scottish Public Health Observatory is also a useful source of data on public health in Scotland.

Housing and Regeneration
Information on housing activity in Scotland including public sector house sales, new house building, local authority lettings and evictions, homelessness, special needs housing, public sector stock and vacancy rates.

Labour Market
The Scottish Government produces various publications and economic profiles which relate specifically to the labour market in Scotland. This includes all the latest information on unemployment, employment, economic inactivity, earnings, public sector employment and other labour market based statistics. Data are available at a variety of geographies: UK, Scotland, Local Authority areas and Parliamentary Constituency areas.

Lifelong Learning
Information on post-compulsory education in Scotland - mainly higher and further education, student support and Education Maintenance Allowances.

Local Government Finance
The Scottish Government is responsible for collecting, analysing and disseminating data on local government income and expenditure, covering revenue and capital spending, council tax and non-domestic rates.

Planning
Statistics and information on the extent of vacant and derelict land in Scotland and the levels and locations of affordable housing that have secured planning consent. Links to other planning related topics are also included.

Population and Migration
Information is obtained from the General Register Office for Scotland, who provide statistical information on Scotland's population, households and vital statistics such as births, deaths and marriages. Also results from Scotland's Census. This section provides a summary of the main statistics from the GROS.

School Education
Statistics on school education in Scotland, including pupil and teacher information, and attainment and qualification results.

Social and Welfare
Includes statistics on neighbourhood statistics, social justice, households, families and individuals, income and welfare, and equality.

Tourism, Culture and Sport
Information and links to sources on Tourism, Arts and Culture and Sport in Scotland.

Transport and Travel
Statistics on bus, rail, air and ferry passengers; cars, lorries, traffic and accidents; walking and cycling; travel to work and school; freight and other aspects of transport.

Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics
A range of small area statistics including information on health, education, poverty, unemployment, housing, population, crime and social / community issues at a local level to support a number of the Governments targets and commitments aimed at closing the gap between disadvantaged areas and the rest of Scotland.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority, a non-ministerial department which reports directly to Parliament.  ONS is the UK Government's single largest statistical producer.  The statistics are organised using the following themes:

ESDS International: National Statistics Time Series Data publications
The Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) is a national data service providing access and support for an extensive range of key economic and social data, both quantitative and qualitative, spanning many disciplines and themes. 

40 major data publications relating to economics, trade, employment and industry. Each 'publication' or 'dataset' in the NS Time Series Data is a group of related time series that mirrors a National Statistics printed publication, e.g. The Pink Book which contains series on the UK Balance of Payments.

The databank contains monthly, quarterly and annual datasets. Monthly datasets include Labour Market Statistics, Monthly Digest, Financial Statistics, Economic Trends plus Retail, Consumer and Producer Price Indices.

Quarterly datasets include National Accounts, Acquisitions and Mergers, Consumer Trends, GDP and Trade by Industry. The Annual Datasets are The Pink Book, the Blue Book (National Accounts statistics), Share Ownership and Economic Trends Annual Supplement.

The earliest series in the Time Series Data starts at 1946, though others begin at various dates from that year onwards.

Eurostat
The main source of statistics relating to the EU and its members.

Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union situated in Luxembourg. Its task is to provide the European Union with statistics at European level that enable comparisons between countries and regions.  To produce these statistics, Eurostat collects data from the national
statistical institutes and harmonises them according to a single methodology.  The data is therefore comparable for the
European Union as a whole.

AA key role of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is to gather official statistics from all member countries, and increasingly, from non- member economies such as China, Russia and Brazil.

SourceOECD uses the Beyond 20/20 statistical browser to present data which allows users to select, view, download, and graph the data.

ESDS International

The Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) is a national data service providing access and support for an extensive range of key economic and social data, both quantitative and qualitative, spanning many disciplines and themes.

The macro datasets in ESDS International all contain socio-economic time series data for a range of countries over a substantial time period. Many of the databanks are the current releases of the major statistical publications produced by intergovernmental organisations such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund or United Nations. Topics covered include national accounts, industrial production, employment, trade, demography, human development and other indicators of national performance and development.

National Accounts of OECD Countries (online publications and database)
With the exception of Quarterly National Accounts data, all data is annual, time period covered is from 1970 where available.

Volume I - Main Aggregates
Covers expenditure based GDP, output based GDP, income based GDP, disposable income, saving and net lending, population and employment.

It includes also comparative tables based on exchange rates and comparative tables based on purchasing power parities. Data are shown for 30 OECD countries expressed in national currency, but also in US dollars for gross domestic product and household final consumption expenditure back to 1985. These data are based on the System of National Accounts 1993 (1993 SNA) for all countries.

Detailed Tables, Volume II
Covers (in addition to main aggregates) detailed national accounts data for most OECD countries. It includes detailed breakdowns by kind of activity for gross value added (current and constant prices, 2000 reference year), components of value added, gross fixed capital formation and employment. It also includes final consumption expenditure of households by purpose, simplified accounts for three main sectors (general government, corporations and households) and general government expenditure by function.

These data are based on the System of National Accounts 1993 (1993 SNA) for all countries.

Vol. IIIa: Financial Accounts - Flows and Vol. IIIb: Financial Balance Sheets - Stocks
Volume IIIa covers financial accounts of 23 OECD countries and includes financial transactions (both net acquisition of financial assets and net incurrence of liabilities) by institutional sector (non-financial corporations, financial corporations, general government, households and non -profit institutions serving households, total economy and the rest of the world) and by financial operation.

Volume IIIb covers financial balance sheets of 21) OECD countries and includes financial stocks (both financial assets and liabilities), by institutional sector (non-financial corporations, financial corporations, general government, households and non- profit institutions serving households, total economy and rest of the world) and by financial instrument.

Quarterly National Accounts
Spans the last 14 years and contains a selection of the accounts most widely used for economic analysis: GDP by type of expenditure and by kind of activity, gross fixed capital formation by sector and by type of goods, and private final consumption by type of expenditure and by object are all shown at both current and constant prices. Financing of capital formation and GDP by cost structure at current prices are also provided.

OECD Economic Surveys (online publication)
An Economic Survey is published every 1½-2 years for each OECD country. Economic Assessments are also published for accession and enhanced engagement countries. Each survey or assessment identifies the main economic challenges faced by the country and analyses policy options to meet them.

OECD Economic Studies (online journal)
publishes articles in the area of economic policy analysis, applied economics, and statistical analysis, generally with an international or cross-country dimension.

Economic Policy Reform: Going for growth (online journal)
Provides an overview of structural policy developments in OECD countries from a comparative perspective. Based on a broad set of indicators of structural policies and performance.

Journal of Business Cycle Measurement (online journal)
The aim of the journal is the exchange of knowledge and information on the theory and operation of business and economic cycle research, including both statistical measurement and analytical aspects. The scope encompasses:

Analysis and explanation of cyclical fluctuations
Business cycle specification, definition and classification
Statistical approaches to the development of short-term economic statistics and indicators
Business tendency, investment and consumer surveys
Use of survey data or cyclical indicators for business cycle analysis
