Heriot-Watt was one of the
senior partners in the JISC funded
Gold Dust project.
The project built and tested a prototype adaptive personalisation
recommender service for the delivery of highly relevant,
personalised current awareness content of a variety of kinds to
academics. This was done by developing Personal Interest
Profiles (PIPs) from existing data, and aggregating RSS (Really
Simple Syndication) feeds from numerous sources, and then
matching the two using text mining techniques and terminological
searching aids in a filtering process. Gold Dust used the
complex information landscape subject area of engineering as its
test-bed, and a controlled group of fifty academic testers as
its main user community.
A
diagram explains how Gold Dust works. More information is available at
the Gold Dust
website.
Heriot-Watt
University is one the partners in the development and delivery
of Intute:
science, engineering and technology.
Intute: Science, Engineering and
Technology offers a free, easy to use tool for discovering the
best Internet resources for teaching, learning and research,
covering the physical sciences, engineering, computing,
geography, mathematics and environmental science. Intute is
funded by the JISC.
More information
is available at the
Intute:
Science, Engineering and Technology website.
From 2005-2007 the Library was
involved in the JISC funded
PerX project, which
developed a pilot service providing subject resource discovery
across a series of repositories of interest to the engineering
learning and research communities. This pilot was used as a
test-bed to explore the practical issues that would be
encountered when considering the possibility of full scale
subject resource discovery services.
More information is available at
the PERX website.
TechXtra,
an initiative of Heriot-Watt Library and ICBL, is a free service
which can help anyone find articles, books, the best websites,
the latest industry news, job announcements, technical reports,
technical data, full text eprints, the latest research, theses &
dissertations, teaching and learning resources and more, in
engineering, mathematics and computing.

Heriot-Watt University was one
of the senior partners in the JISC funded
ticTOCs Project. The
ticTOCs project developed a journals Tables of Contents (TOCs)
current awareness service, making it easy for academics and
researchers to find, display, store, combine and reuse Tables of
Contents from multiple publishers.
