Introduction

The library subscribes to an extensive range of databases and other electronic materials which are paid for by the University.  Access to these resources is restricted to Heriot Watt University staff and students.  At present access is controlled in various different ways -  IP address; Heriot-Watt username and password; other username and password.  Logging in to the VLE will not automatically grant automatic access to the library's databases which require passwords.  While only a few require passwords on-campus, off-campus access for all the library databases will require an additional login using -

Heriot-Watt username and password

or

Other username and password (page only available on Heriot Watt Network or via VPN)

If linking to a subscribed library resource please use the URLs given on this page.  These will direct students to the link to the resource on our databases page where information is given for off-campus access and passwords.

For resources which state On & Off campus access is via PASSWORD e.g.

Colour Index
Subject Coverage: Nomenclature, constitution, main applications and suppliers of dyes and pigments
Type: Product database
ON- & OFF-campus access: Access via PASSWORD.

You may wish to include the following with the link to the resource in VISION -

Clicking on the PASSWORD link will display the relevant username and password if you are on-campus or logged in to the VPN.   If you have problems viewing the passwords, please contact your Subject Librarian.

 

For resources which fall into this category, you might instead include the following text  to accompany a link  . .

 

"You will need a username and password to access this resource.  These are, username:  . . . . . . . . password:  . . . . . . ."  (you can view the relevant passwords on the passwords page from on-campus or if logged in to the VPN.)
