Linking to an eBook

● URL details

To create a link to an eBook, it is best to get the URL for the book from our catalogue, as this will be a stable (or persistent) URL e.g.

http://ezproxy1.hw.ac.uk:2048/login?url=http://www.netLibrary.com/urlapi.asp?action=summary&v=1&bookid=70313

The URL give in the catalogue record for the eBook has authentication built in so students and staff can access the eBook from on-campus and off-campus using the same link. Most links use EZProxy authentication which uses the individual's Heriot Watt ID (i.e. the username and password used for HWU email and Vision) to login.

● Finding URLs in the catalogue

You can find the URLs for eBooks in the catalogue by following these steps -

1. Search for the item in the catalogue (eg by title work / author, etc)

2. Click on the title of the item to enter the catalogue record

3. In the item's record, right click on the 'Electronic Access' link and select 'copy shortcut', then paste where you want the link to go.

The html code to use for linking to URLs would take the following format -
