Distance Learning Support - Using Libraries Near You

UK & Ireland

We belong to a co-operative scheme, SCONUL Access, which allows you to use and borrow from a large number of other University Libraries in the UK and Ireland.

You can see full details of the scheme, including a list of member libraries

More information about the scheme is available from our SCONUL Access co-ordinator Jill Gallacher.   You must be registered on one of the University's Distance Learning courses and be registered as a member of the Library. Complete the SCONUL Access Form and email, post or hand it to the Service Desk for validation. The application form is available from the Service Desk in Riccarton and Martindale Libraries, or can be downloaded from the SCONUL Access web site. After we have validated your form, we will give you or send you a SCONUL Access card which you can use, along with your Heriot-Watt ID/Library card, to borrow from participating Libraries. The host library may require you to complete their library registration form and to supply a photograph.

If you wish to visit a UK library which is not a member of the SCONUL Access scheme, you should check that Library's website or contact them directly to see whether you will be permitted to visit and to consult and/or borrow items. If necessary, we can provide you with a letter of introduction to support your request for admittance to another library, though we cannot guarantee that this will be granted. Contact your Subject Librarian if you would like a letter of introduction.

Libraries in other countries

If you wish to visit a library outside the UK and Ireland, you should check that Library's website or contact them directly to see whether you will be permitted to visit and to consult and/or borrow items. If necessary, we can provide you with a letter of introduction to support your request for admittance to another library, though we cannot guarantee that this will be granted. Contact your Subject Librarian if you would like a letter.
