What is Discovery?

Discovery search allows Heriot-Watt University students and staff to find books, journals, journal articles, reports, electronic books, market reports, newspaper articles etc easily and quickly using a single search box.

What am I searching?

You are searching across a number of different databases and will find:

  • results from the Library Catalogue (details of books, electronic books, journal titles, conference proceedings etc held by the Library in print or electronic format)
  • abstracts and full-text from most of the journals to which the Library subscribes
  • abstracts from in total over 50,000 magazine and journal articles and 20,000 conference proceedings

The majority of Heriot-Watt University Library subscribed resources, and some open access resources, are searched by DISCOVERY.

Databases not included in DISCOVERY should be searched as normal. Access via the Library databases page.

Should I still search individual databases/journals, even if they are included in DISCOVERY?

Yes, if you want to use specific feature - eg citation searching Search the Library Catalogue and individual databases and journals . These are linked to from the Library databases page, A-Z journals page, and from tabs on the Library Resources search box on the home page. Journal titles are also listed in the Library Catalogue.

 


Can I use this service off-campus?

Yes. When prompted, enter your Heriot-Watt username and password (the same password you use to access your email).
