Concise Guide to Information Sources in the Built Environment

To find journal articles, reports, conference proceedings, or dissertations on your research topic, start by searching one of the databases listed below. Links to these databases, and many more, are available from the Library's Databases page, where details are given on how to get access from on-campus and off-campus.

ICONDA (International Construction DAtabase)
Coverage: Urban and regional planning, construction, civil and structural engineering, construction equipment and materials, project management, building maintenance, etc.


Centre of Business Information for the Property Industry (RICS Library Direct)
Coverage: Construction and Surveying. Indexes items held in the Library, including books, articles, law cases, property market reports, etc.

Construction and Building Abstracts (CBA)
Indexes 200 journals in construction.

Compendex (via Engineering Village 2)
Coverage: All engineering disciplines.

Abstracts in New Technologies and Engineering (ANTE)
Indexes technical and applied science journals, with an emphasis on UK publications. Available through CSA Illumina.

ISI Web of Knowledge
Coverage: Multidisciplinary - science, social science and engineering. 

Google Scholar
Use Google Scholar to find articles from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the web.

TechXtra
Find articles from numerous databases via TechXtra which indexes over 4 million items.

Index to Theses
Coverage: Provides citations for theses accepted for higher degrees by the universities of Great Britain and Ireland.

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Abstracts
Coverage: Includes citations for dissertations by authors from over 1,000 graduate schools and universities. 

Journals

Built Environment journals available in Heriot-Watt University Library are listed in our Journals List.  Print journals on the Built Environment are normally shelved at 690 on Level 4, but relevant titles may be shelved in other sections.
