The School of the Built Environment has an excellent national and international research reputation, as the leading Built Environment research institution in Scotland, and one of the top in the UK. The School of Engineering and Physical Sciences is built around the established subjects of chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical, electronic and computer engineering, chemistry and physics, and our courses are designed to meet the needs of students and their future employers, offering the highest degree of flexibility and choice within the wide range of topics available. The Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University specialises in teaching, training and research, and has the largest petroleum engineering research programme in the UK. The Institute's Orkney-based International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) was established to carry out advanced research, postgraduate training and consultancy in marine resource management and related issues.
