The Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University is recognised internationally as one of the leading centres of excellence in petroleum engineering teaching, training and research. It is multi-disciplinary and focuses on upstream oil and gas resources. The Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University specialises in teaching, training and research, and has the largest petroleum engineering research programme in the UK. The Institute's Orkney-based International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) was established to carry out advanced research, postgraduate training and consultancy in marine resource management and related issues. The continued and growing demand for the exploitation of subsurface oil and gas resources means that Heriot-Watt remains committed to the development and delivery of training and research programmes relevant to the needs of the international petroleum industry. Education and training are provided through taught Masters degree courses and through supervised research for the degrees of MPhil and PhD. Research activity was awarded the highest (5*) Grade in the most recent government Research Assessment Exercise, confirming 10 years of internationally rated performance. We have also been awarded an 'exemplary' rating by the QAA for our teaching.
