Enrolment and Induction

At the beginning of each academic year, all on-campus students are required to enrol (i.e. register) with the University by completing and signing a Registration Form.

Authority to Register

The first part of the process is that all students attend a pre-registration meeting within their School in order to have their programme of study and choice of modules approved by their Course Coordinator or member of academic staff.

At this meeting, you will be issued with an 'Authority to Register' form which contains a variety of information such as contact details, programme of study, year of study and the modules you are registering for. It is important that this form is checked carefully and signed off by the member of academic staff. The time and location of these meetings will be published in the registration handbook.

Student Identity Cards

All new students will be issued with a Student Identity Card for the duration of their study – it is essential that you keep your Card in a safe place. A replacement Card will only be issued in the following circumstances:

• In the case of loss;
• Where, in the opinion of the University, the card has been damaged to an extent which renders it unusable;
• Following change of expiry date.

A charge equivalent to £10.00 will be made for a replacement card in the event of loss or damage. No charge will be levied if an official police report is produced confirming that the card has been stolen.

All Students are advised that they are required to show their Student Identity Card and confirmation of registration to an authorised person on the following occasions:

• at an examination;
• on request by any officer of the University;
• use of Library and Computing Services;
• on any other occasion for good cause.

Computing Services

Once registered, students will be issued with Heriot-Watt University user names and passwords. Students should use their Heriot-Watt email account for all matters connected with their University study.
