Cycle Routes to Heriot-Watt University - From the West

On Road

Balerno There are back roads which connect to the The Long Dalmahoy road. This runs parallel to, and south of the A71, its fairly quiet but a few minor hills. Between Heriot-Watt and East Calder traffic lights, it adds only 0.2 miles to the trip over the direct route on the A71. For the North side of the campus Enter/exit the university by means of the Contractor's entrance (although this is a not an official entrance) Please note that because of the closure of the A71 in 2002-2003 Long Dalmahoy road is now in bad condition - pot-holes, awful "temporary" patching - all as a result of the heavy traffic. The contractors entrance to get to the boundary road can be very muddy, particularly when there are contractors working on the new science park.

Mainly Off-Road

The Canal towpath is a wonderful ride from anywhere North-West of the University. Access points every 2 or 3 miles. and leave the canal opposite Hermiston House. Enter Heriot-Watt via Hermiston Walk (Take care when crossing A71).
