Career Management Skills
Students should be encouraged at an early stage in their academic career to think about their own skills, interests and values and also the range of career opportunities available to them.
We can run workshops and seminars to help them to plan ahead, develop the skills and experience they require to market themselves effectively and manage their own career development.
Professional Development Planning
Professional Development Planning involves a cycle of recording, reflecting, planning and implementing personal, academic and career development. It provides students with a mechanism by which to review and articulate their goals and plan to acquire the relevant learning and skills to achieve them.
The Careers Service can provide support for PDP through providing materials, advice and delivery of PDP sessions to students.
Work Related Learning
Many employers prefer, or even demand, that students have some form of work related learning preferably in the relevant industry sector to which they are applying. This can take a variety of forms including: sandwich/summer placements; job shadowing; visits to/from companies; industrially based projects; business simulations.
The Careers Service works to connect academic staff with key personnel from all areas of industry and commerce.
Employability Skills
At HWU the following core skills have been identified as important to the future employability of students: Communication; Teamworking & Leadership; Problem Solving; Scholarship, and Professionalism.
The Careers Service works in partnership with EDU and Schools to ensure these skills are embedded as learning opportunities throughout the curriculum.
