Career Checklist
- If you still have no clear career idea, make use of Prospects Planner. This computer aided guidance system can be useful to generate careers ideasbasedon your subject, skills, interests and motivation. It is useful to bring the results printout from Prospects Planner when you come for a careers guidance interview.
- Careers service staff can help you with quick queries in the Careers Information Room (SR 1.08) between 11.00am - 3.00pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 11.00am - 1.00pm on Wednesdays. For in-depth careers guidance, longer appointments can be booked by calling in person or contacting the Careers Adviser for your subject area.
- If necessary, book an in-depth guidance interview with a careers adviser.
- Register with Jobs Direct to search for graduate opportunities and get vacancy updates sent direct to your email.
- Search the Prospects Employer Profiles to identify companies that offer the type of work you are looking for in the location you would like to work.
- Start your applications soon as some closing dates are early as October!!
- Book your place for employer presentations and skills sessions on CVs, interviews and aptitude tests. For details see What's On.
Penultimate Year Students
- Register with Jobs Direct to get the latest information on internships, work placements and volunteering opportunities sent direct to your email.
- You can find useful information on the Vacation Work and Voluntary Work pages. There is also information on UK Income Tax and how it effects employment during term/vacation.

What can you do to develop your employability skills?
- Gain work experience through part-time and vacation work. See Jobs Direct for current vacancies.
- Join university clubs, teams or societies
- Take on roles of responsibility, e.g. class representative, Student Association office bearer
- Take part in some form of voluntary work
