About the Careers Service
Our aim is to assist Heriot-Watt University students and graduates make informed career choices. We do this by offering them opportunities to
develop skills and gain experiences which will enable them to manage their future career development andachieve their goals.
We also offer impartial and confidential careers advice and guidance to all of our students and graduates up to 2 years after graduating. Find out how you can access our services.
Our Careers Advisers give professional and impartial advice on a range of issues. A careers interview could help if you:
- are unsure about your plans and how to make decisions
- have some ideas but need help putting them into action
- want help with application forms or yourCV
- need to know more about where and how to look for jobs
- want information/advice on postgraduate study
- need to practice your interview techniques

On graduating Nick worked briefly in the financial sector before taking the Diploma in Careers Guidance and working as a careers officer in schools. He joined Heriot-Watt in 1994 and became Director of the Careers Advisory Service in 2002. He holds the Diploma in Careers Guidance in Higher Education as well as the British Psychological Society's BPS Level A certificate.

Following an BEng in Electronics and Music from the University of Glasgow, Jill travelled and worked abroad for 18 months before taking up a graduate management trainee position with Diageo. After undertaking several roles within Diageo, including Production Line Team Leader, Manufacturing Technologist and Supply Chain Analyst/Planner, Jill took a career break and re-trained as a Careers Adviser, completing the PGDip/QCG in Careers Guidance in 2005 at Napier University. Having worked at Stirling University as a Career Development Adviser for 3 years, Jill joined the Careers Service at Heriot-Watt in September 2009.

Prior to studying at university as a mature student, Alan worked in the photographic industry. He graduated with an MA from Edinburgh University in 1998 and completed the Diploma in Careers Guidance at Napier University in 1999. After spells working as a Careers Adviser in London and at Napier University, Alan joined the Careers Service at Heriot-Watt in September 2003.

Kristi joined the careers team in 2007 and before that worked for Edinburgh Convention Bureau for 6 years with responsiblity for marketing Edinburgh as a conference destination.
During her time at the bureau she gained gained extensive experience in conference and event organising.
