Research Groups
The department achieved a rating of "5" in the UK
government’s Research Assessment Exercise in 1996 (RAE96). This is the
highest score for any built environment department in Scotland and one
of only five in the UK. The next RAE is scheduled for 2001 and the
department is working to retaining its high standing in the field of
built environment research at that time.
The
design, construction and maintenance of buildings requires the expertise
of professionals who are specialists in design, engineering and
management. The department aims to provide comprehensive education for
building professionals — building environmental engineers, building
surveyors, quantity surveyors, estate managers and valuers and
construction and project managers — and our teaching and research
reflects this diversity. The department has an international reputation
for the production of high quality research, confirmed by the award of
prizes and by invitations for staff to speak at research conferences
world-wide.
Research in the department covers many disciplines and includes
long-term major research projects, short term research in support of
courses and consultancy work for industry. The full time academic staff
team, with 27 members, is highly multidisciplinary and has expertise in
building technology, architecture, building surveying, quantity
surveying, economics, management, building environmental engineering,
materials, lighting, acoustics and valuation. The department has
extensive learning
resources available for use by staff and research students. Staff
collaborate actively with colleagues in other departments in the
University and with research groups at other universities and
institutions in the UK and elsewhere.
The Department is active in overseas collaboration particularly via
the Conseil International do Batiment pour la Recherche, L’Etude et la
Documentation (CIB) working commissions. In addition there are joint
projects with university and governmental organisations in the United
States, Brazil, Europe and Russia and a number of developing-world
countries funded by the British Council and Overseas Development
Administration.
