Developing the next generation of global leaders
Our global vision
Heriot-Watt is one of the UK’s leading universities for business and industry and has a reputation for innovative education, enterprise and leading edge research in science, business, engineering and design.
We are often referred to as Scotland’s international University, with a third of on-campus students in Scotland coming from outwith the UK, a campus in Dubai with around 2,500 students, a new Malaysia campus opening in 2013 and 50 international academic learning partners in 30 countries.
Heriot-Watt University’s international strategy is an integral part of its overall strategy and vision, Focus on the Future.
Our global strategy is consistent with the philosophy of facilitating lifelong learning and access that was championed by our founders. Over the next ten years, the University will extend the availability of a Heriot-Watt education through the development of further overseas campuses and the development of its global partner network. We will continue to be recognised and valued for the quality and relevance of our research collaborations and academic programmes, delivered through our international campuses, our academic partners or accessed by independent learners.
Heriot-Watt has an established reputation for:
- contributing practical solutions across the energy agenda
- interdisciplinary approaches to address environmental and climate change issues
- collaborative work between life and physical sciences to improve health
- high impact research assessing and managing the risks that confront society in the modern world
- infrastructure design addressing increased urbanisation across the globe
Our ambition is to place Heriot-Watt at the forefront of research and research-led education in the UK and internationally, delivering world-class innovative research, relevant to economic growth and development. With an excellent track record in graduate careers, Heriot-Watt will continue to make a significant contribution in creating the next generation of global leaders.
A model of transnational education
Working in partnership to build our international presence
A significant element of our international presence and reputation is built on long term, sustainable and high quality partnerships. Through our network of Approved Learning Partners (ALPs), students are able to register and study for a Heriot-Watt degree award within their local context.
We have a developing range of programmes which are suitable for flexible modes of delivery with academic partners. All these programmes are offered with comprehensive learning materials in on-line or paper based format and we have strong quality assurance processes that underpin the programme arrangements and our partner relationships. Many teaching staff at our partner institutions are recognised by Heriot-Watt University as tutors or teachers and work closely with colleagues based at the Scottish or Dubai Campuses.
In addition to the ALP model, Heriot-Watt has a significant number of collaborative arrangements with institutions both in teaching and research.
Heriot-Watt was the first UK university to create an overseas campus in the Dubai International Academic City. Students come to our Dubai Campus from the UAE, the Gulf region and beyond, to undertake a range of postgraduate and undergraduate degree programmes. Currently, our Dubai Campus supports over 2,500 students on programmes in management, built environment, engineering and textiles.
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia
Heriot-Watt University's first premises in Putrajaya, Malaysia opens to students in the early part of 2013 when we launch our global MBA programme from Edinburgh Business School. In the meantime, a major new campus is under development in Putrajaya and this will open in 2014.
Students from across the world
We have the largest international student cohort in Scotland with about one third of our students coming from countries outside the UK. The 2009 Sunday Times University Guide ranked us in 7th place for the number of students studying with us who are from other EU and non-EU countries.
A global network of Heriot-Watt Alumni
The Watt Club, Heriot-Watt’s alumni association, has a truly global network of graduates who meet through our club branches around the world. Each year, the University hosts overseas graduations in Dubai, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Moscow which showcase the achievements across our global academic communities of staff and students, and the success of our partnerships worldwide.
