Our recruitment process
Our Charter for Recruitment & Selection aims to create a positive recruitment and selection experience for everyone, across every part of our University, and for every level of post.
Our recruitment process is outlined here so that, as a prospective employee, you know what to expect when you apply for a role at Heriot-Watt.
The application process
Our People & Organisational Development team take care of all incoming applications and will be your main point of contact with us, ensuring that we handle all personal details sensitively and responsibly.
If you’ve applied for a specific role they will send your details to the relevant manager.
If you’ve applied speculatively, the People & Organisational Development team will acknowledge your application and advise you if there are any suitable current vacancies. Unfortunately, at present, we are unable to keep your details on file for future opportunities.
The selection process
Once the recruiting manager has received your information, they will review your application against the requirements of the role. If you look like a good match they will be in touch with you to arrange interviews and/or assessments.
Your interview & the assessment process
The type of interview or assessment we use varies depending on the requirements of the role we are recruiting for. We’ll let you know which type of interview or assessments apply to the role you have applied for in advance of your interview.
After your interview
After the interview/selection process has been completed, the recruiting manager will contact all the short-listed candidates to advise you of the outcome.
The successful candidate will then receive a conditional offer of employment in writing from the People & Organisational Development team.
This will be confirmed in writing, together with an agreed start date, once we have received satisfactory references and you have produced any necessary documentation, such as eligibility to work in the UK or clear Disclosure Scotland checks.

If you would like feedback on how you performed at the interview or assessment process, you may contact either:
- the manager who chaired the selection process directly
- a member of the People & Organisational Development team, who will pass your request onto the selection panel
