Job description

Within the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering (www.IB3.eps.hw.ac.uk) is now seeking to develop instrumentation for use in ‘touch and tell’ fibre-optic sensors, building on our experience in optical instrumentation, fibre optics, photonics and synthesis imaging.

We are seeking a Research Associate/Research Fellow to develop optical systems for fibre-optic endoscopy using multi-core fibres, with some fibre cores used to develop SERS and fluorescence sensing, and some cores used to image and make textural analysis of tissue at the distal end of the fibre-sensor.  The post holder will be part of a large project that aims to create new diagnostic devices and tools for use in critical-care medicine. Applicants will have  recent post-graduate research experience in areas such as image processing, optics, data analysis and optical instrument control.  An interest in inter-disciplinary research at the life sciences interface is crucial, as is an ability to communicate with colleagues across disciplines. The IRC programme provides for a large number of PhD studentships, and the post-holder will be expected to participate in research-student supervision.

The post is available immediately, initially for 1-2 years. Dependent on the results of a mid-term review of the programme by EPSRC, the post may be extended for a further 2-3 years.

Informal approaches are encouraged and may be made to Professor Alan Greenaway (a.h.greenaway@hw.ac.uk).

The closing date is indicative and the University reserves the right to appoint a suitable candidate prior to this date.
