Job description

Within the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering (www.IB3.eps.hw.ac.uk) is now seeking to develop instrumentation for use in ‘touch and tell’ fibre-optic sensors, building on our experience in optical instrumentation, fibre optics, photonics and synthesis imaging.

We are seeking an experienced, talented, patient and pragmatic Research Associate/Fellow who can help to maintain the applications focus of the optical work at Heriot-Watt, help to validate components and assist in the translation of that work into the clinical application.

The post is based at Heriot-Watt, but the majority of time will be spent as part of the interdisciplinary ‘hub’ team at the Queens Medical Research Institute in Edinburgh, working to ensure that the new photonic technologies developed within the programme are ‘fit for purpose’ and that they are successfully translated into the clinical environment. The post holder will be part of a large project that aims to create new diagnostic devices and tools for use in critical-care medicine.  Applicants will have a broad post-graduate research experience in optics and photonics systems and, preferably, some experience of optics in clinical applications. An interest in inter-disciplinary research at the life sciences interface is crucial, as is an ability to communicate with colleagues across disciplines.  The IRC programme provides for a large number of PhD studentships, and the post-holder will be expected to participate in research-student supervision.

The post is available immediately, initially for 1-2 years. Dependent on the results of a mid-term review of the programme by EPSRC, the post may be extended for a further 2-3 years.

Informal approaches are encouraged and may be made to Professor Alan Greenaway (a.h.greenaway@hw.ac.uk).

The closing date is indicative and the University reserves the right to appoint a suitable candidate prior to this date.
