Research Associate

Within the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences is now seeking to develop instrumentation for use in ‘touch and tell’ fibre-optic sensors, building on our experience in femtosecond laser machining/writing.

We are seeking a Research Associate to develop integrated photonic structures for applications in endoscopic imaging, using ultrafast laser Inscription (ULI), a laser-writing technology that uniquely facilitates the three-dimensional fabrication of structures such as micro-optics, micro-mechanics, micro-fluidics and integrated optic waveguides.  The post holder will be part of a large project that aims to create new diagnostic devices and tools for use in critical-care medicine.  Applicants will have  recent post-graduate research experience in areas such as ultrafast laser writing, integrated optics, fibre-optics and instrumentation development. An interest in inter-disciplinary research at the life sciences interface is crucial, as is an ability to communicate with colleagues across disciplines. The IRC programme provides for a large number of PhD studentships, and the post-holder will be expected to participate in research-student supervision.

The post is available immediately, initially for 1-2 years. Dependent on the results of a mid-term review of the programme by EPSRC, the post may be extended for a further 2-3 years.
