At Heriot-Watt we understand that learning and development is vital to our success. As an employee, whether you're working independently or in a team, you'll be supported towards developing your skills and knowledge through a wide range of opportunities in our career development programme.

Our development programme is continually evolving to make sure we meet the needs of staff and teams, and currently covers elements ranging from induction sessions to academic enhancement.

Academic enhancement

Academic Enhancement supports you as you develop your academic career. As well as the flagship Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP), there is a rich mix of workshops, seminars and other events intended to make you an effective, rounded teacher and researcher. Leadership & management

'Leading our Future' is our comprehensive Leadership & Management Programme, which includes workshops on personal impact, leading and building a team, and leading through change. The programme includes feedback reports, practical action learning sets, and one-to-one coaching.

We offer accredited leadership programmes through the Institute of Leadership and Management for first-line supervisors and managers.

We also hold regular, bite-sized tutorials on management-related policies and processes, where managers can discuss issues and gain practical advice.

Professional development

Our workshops on communication, interpersonal and organisational skills can help you develop your personal effectiveness skills.

The Career Thinking Programme aims to work with individuals to help develop career goals and increase awareness of career development opportunities available with Heriot-Watt University, through a series of workshops and optional one-to-one career development coaching.

Our induction networking lunch gives all new employees a warm welcome to Heriot-Watt, and offers the opportunity to meet others whilst enjoying a friendly and relaxed lunch.

IT training

Our dedicated IT training team offers workshops, tutorials and drop-in sessions on a wide range of software. We also offer certification options and we are an approved ECDL centre.
